This month, our True Colours Sewing group explored the art of quilting and costume design and creating beautifully unique headpieces using luxurious donated fabrics.

Getting Creative with Fabric and Form

Over the past few weeks, our sewists have been experimenting with texture, colour, and costume design. Building on earlier discussions about clothing and quilting, participants wanted to challenge themselves with something new and what better way than to create an adorned headpiece?

The project introduced more advanced sewing techniques such as sewing curves, bagging out, and pattern cutting, all part of a 12-piece pattern that everyone was excited to learn. From the very first session, we focused on taking accurate measurements and choosing which size pattern pieces to use; an important step in understanding how measurements translate into fabric forms.

The group then moved on to selecting their materials. We used rich, textured sample fabrics kindly donated to Radiate Arts, which added depth and luxury to each piece.

Learning Through Making

Once the fabrics were chosen, it was time to cut! Participants explored different cutting techniques - some pinned pattern pieces directly to fabric before cutting, while others traced outlines with chalk. These methods helped everyone find what worked best for them and built confidence in precision cutting.

When it came to sewing, our group followed the golden rule of 'right sides together' as they joined each panel. Pinning, stitching, and navigating curves became easier the more we practiced and everyone settled into the rhythm of sewing.

One participant shared:

“Coming to the group sessions helps me pick up the skills - I’m such a visual learner, I wouldn’t be able to do it any other way.”

Building Confidence, Stitch by Stitch

Across four sessions, each participant worked at their own pace, supported by the group and facilitators. The project encouraged everyone to slow down, problem-solve, and celebrate each success.

Another participant reflected on the experience:

“This was a really advanced sewing pattern, and it’s the first thing I’ve made! The support I got was so helpful, and I’m excited to make more.”

By the end, everyone had produced a completely individual headpiece, each a reflection of their creativity, patience, and growing skills.

What’s Next for True Colours Sewing?

After completing this ambitious project, many participants shared how much they’d like to explore clothing and wearable art in future sessions. The enthusiasm for costume-making has truly sparked something special and we can’t wait to continue building on these skills in upcoming workshops.

Our sewing sessions continue to be a welcoming and inclusive space full of creativity, learning, and community.
