This article explores the Art for Living Well project at DSN (Deaf and Sensory Network), funded by Cheshire and Wirral Partnership NHS (CWP NHS), highlighting how creative workshops support relaxation, self-expression, and emotional wellbeing.

Introduction

The Art for Living Well project offers a series of therapeutic art workshops designed to help participants explore emotions, reflect on personal experiences, and develop practical tools for managing stress.

Through painting, drawing, collage and more, participants were encouraged to experiment with materials, focus on the present moment, and connect with others in a supportive environment.

Relaxation and Mindful Engagement

Many activities focused on relaxation and mindfulness. Participants took part in breathing and drawing exercises, discovering how their lines and movements could change with their breath. These exercises helped participants focus on the moment, reduce distractions, and develop new tools for calming the mind.

“It felt really calming – I could just concentrate on the moment and forget everything else.”

Art-making with natural materials, such as feathers and sticks dipped in paint, encouraged slow, deliberate movements and pattern-making inspired by nature. Some participants reflected on how creating these pieces reminded them of simple joys and contentment.

“This reminded me of the simple things in life – just being content with what’s around me.”

Participants also engaged in mindful stitching, exploring layering, shapes, and patterns. This slow, focused activity encouraged presence, reflection, and confidence in creative decision-making.

Emotional Expression and Reflection

A central theme of the workshops was exploring and expressing emotions visually. Participants used exercises like paired mirror drawing and visualising feelings through colour, shape, and form helping participants reflect on stress, anxiety, grief, and hope.

“I drew a tornado in red for how overwhelmed I feel, and then cooler, looser shapes to represent calmness.”

Discussions around participants’ artwork created opportunities to hear others’ experiences, offering validation and insight into shared challenges, such as balancing family responsibilities or managing grief. These conversations encouraged connection, empathy, and understanding.

Exploring Nature and Materials

Workshops encouraged participants to experiment with a variety of materials, from paint and collage to natural objects and stitching threads. Engaging with new tools inspired creative problem-solving and playful exploration. Nature, in particular, was a recurring inspiration. Participants depicted flowers, trees, and landscapes, reflecting on how spending time outdoors and maintaining a relationship with nature brought calm and peace into their lives.

“Using these materials makes me see things differently and appreciate nature in new ways.”

The creative process also supported reflection on personal experiences, helping participants translate emotions and stress into tangible forms that could be explored, understood, and transformed.

Across the workshops, participants reported a range of benefits including relaxation, emotional insight and refection, confidence in creative expression, and stronger connections with peers. Art became a tool for reflection, coping, and personal growth, helping participants explore both everyday challenges and deeper emotional experiences.

“These sessions have helped me see a bigger world through art.”

The Art for Living Well project demonstrates that creativity can provide both emotional and practical tools for wellbeing, offering participants opportunities to pause, reflect, and express themselves in supportive ways.
