We caught up with Laura, who has volunteered with Radiate Arts since December to hear more about her experiences of taking part and supporting creative workshops.

What were your expectations going into volunteering with Radiate Arts?

I was hoping to rebuild my confidence in the workplace following a period of not working. I was also excited to meet like-minded people and be in a creative environment where I could help others.

What sort of creative things did you want to do?

My background is textile design, so I was looking forward to using these skills such as sewing and needlework. I was also interested in therapeutic art, which I was lucky enough to assist with, through the six weekprogramme with DSN in Northwich. I thoroughly enjoyed these sessions and loved seeing how art could help people feel more at ease and help them connect with others.

Which projects have you taken part in with True Colours?

I have helped with the Friday sewing sessions which has been a fantastic opportunity to support people in the LGBTQ+ community in gaining new skills and to provide a space for their creativity, and for participantsto meet like-minded people. I’ve felt extremely welcomed into these sessions and the is always such a great atmosphere amongst everyone taking part.

Have you learned anything new?

I’ve improved on my sewing skills which is great and I’ve picked up some basic sign from working with the participants at DSN. I only know a tiny amount of sign, but it was so rewarding to learn new words and use these new words to build positive rapport with the participants.

Have you met any new people or made new connections?

I have! All the staff, volunteers and participants of Radiate Arts have been so welcoming and lovely. I feel like I’ve met new people of all ages and walks of life and I very much hope to stay in touch.

What do you think you've gained?

I’ve absolutely gained my confidence back, and since volunteering at Radiate Arts I’ve managed to get back into paid work, which is fantastic. Volunteering has definitely helped in regaining my self-confidence and the belief I can try new things and I can cope!

Would you recommend volunteering with Radiate Arts?

I would 100% recommend volunteering with Radiate Arts. The team are so lovely and are very flexible and accommodating to make volunteering work around other commitments. The programme of activities is also very varied so that there is something to suit everyone depending on your skills base and interests. Thank you for having me Radiate Arts!
